Visual Impairment

Narrator

I was able to set up the narrator program on the computer as this will be able to help someone with sight problems to know what they are doing on the computer. The narrator helps by telling you what you are doing on the computer. I enabled the narrator by going to the start menu and then to all programs, I then went to Accessories and then to Ease of Access, then within this folder there was a program called narrator which I clicked on and a small window appeared in the bottom right corner. This will help a person with a visual imparement as it mean they do not have to worry about not being able to see the options as the narrator will tell you what you scroll over.

On Screen Keyboard

I also set up an on screen keyboard which can help if it is difficult to see the letters on the keyboard or find it hard to type and using the mouse to click in the letters would be easier. I did this by going to the start menu then to all programs then once again going to the Accessories and then to the Ease of Access folder and then clicking on the on screen keyboard which brought up a keyboard on screen. This will help as it means that you do not have to try and see the letters on the keyboard as they are on the screen underneath where you want to write rather than looking from the keyborad to the screen.

 

Magnifier

I then was able to set up the magnifier which is good to someone who has sight problems as it allows you to scroll over a certain area on the page and then magnifies the area to enlarge it and make it easier to see. I set this up by going to the Ease of Access folder again and clicking on the magnifier. The magnifier gives you a choice of three different types of magnifier docked, lens and full page.  This will help because it will make a section on the screen bigger and allow the user to see the options better.

Large Icons

Large icons can help a person that is visually impaired as it makes the icons bigger and easier to see, this enables the user to see the icons clearer. I did this by going to the home screen on the computer and right clicked beside the icons, I then went to view and then to icons which changed the size of the icons. Making the icons bigger will help as it will show the icons more clearly so that the user will be able to see the icons better in order to chose the option they want.
